I had always wanted an Afghan, and we were excited to see such beautiful dogs. I owned the old book on Afghan Hounds by Sunny Shay, and I was thrilled to be able to visit the Grandeur Kennels. My husband took a photo of me with a gorgeous silver/cream Afghan names Sabby (?) on the doorstep of the home, who was a gift for the girlfriend of the man who ran the kennel (could it be Mr. Rechler from this site?). It was so long ago, and since then, I have had three Afghans in twenty years. I love them; they are gorgeous and I miss so much having one! I loved the website. I hear you have a state of the art kennel. I was hoping to see some photos of it.

Michael was always kind, but also knew how to take me aside and ream me good for doing things in the ring. As a new owner/handler his lessons help me hit top 20 and the beginning of our top winning hounds. Now with 18 years behind us, it was these beginnings with Michael and Grandeur that have helped us along the way. We thank you and Michael, you will always be in our hearts. Although he was not of show quality, he was the most gentle animal we have ever known and wonderful with our children. I never heard Kini growl or show an aggression and was a gentle and loving as any animal could be. We loved him dearly and it broke our hearts when he passed. If you can describe a dog as "saintly", he was and he is with the angels now. Just thinking and writing about him brings tears to my eyes. He had Shirkhan's coloring and had the bearing but not enough to show him. He died of cancer Feb 10 1981. I spent several overnights at Grandeur with Sunny Shay trying to find the right pup. She walked out with Sony (he was approx 9 months old) and said look at this one "but he is not for sale" It finally cost me 3 antique mirrors and $1,000 to persuade Sunny to sell this dog to me. It was the greatest purchase of my life. I am truely sorry to hear at this late date of Sunny Shays death. We are sorry to learn only this morning of the death of Roger Rechler.....the years since about 1970 seem very recent to me, very fresh and present, both the people and the dogs, so to me, personally, this is the loss of a very young person. The dog fancy is so fortunate to have had a continuum of this spectacular lineage and we hope and trust it continues into the forever of the future, past the lifespan of a mortal human being or any individual dog. That is immortality. hermine Hermine Stover <hermine@endangeredspecies.com> Perris, CA USA - Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 10:46:57 (EST) My sympathies to the Rechler family on the loss of Roger. I remember very well the Grandeur Afghans being campaigned and especially loved Shahpphire, she was gorgeous. In viewing the website I have learned a lot more about a very elegant and regal breed. Although I show Scottish Terriers, I admire the Afghans of Grandeur. Such a rich history starting with Sunny Shay, you can feel the love for the breed in every part of this website. I am currently studying the breed in preparation for my judges application and needed to see some of the dogs that have made a impact on this beautiful breed. I can study the "look" and silhouette and compare it with the standard. Fortunately, I had the pleasure of watching Tryst and Michael make history and that picture is imbedded in my mind. I truly hope and want to do justice to your breed when I judge. Olga K. I am hugely gratified to see how tenaciously the original Afghan type is being preserved by Grandeur, and by Calahorra here in Australia. I have a visceral reaction to the original type which is unexpected since I am strictly amateur and have never showed or bred; but there is no denying that these dogs hit me at my most primitive level. I can only hope that this type of Afghan continues through to the next milennia! He had the most beautyfull black Afghan on the grooming table and when he let me pet him I had tears in my eyes because I was thinking of mine. I asked him if he would sell me a dog. But he said no, he would send me one. I really did not believed him but I gave him my address. A few weeks later I picked up "true Shadow of Grandeur" at the airport. The cutest, sweetest, comest black afghanpuppy ever. He is now 10 years old today. I hope my best friend will live a long life with us. He never does anything wrong my sweet boy. Savannah just passed this past week and the void in our hearts and in our home will never be filled. As I type this my eyes are filled with tears, but I just wanted to say I'm so lucky that I had her in my life she was the best dog I ever owned, and I had a lot of dogs, Savannah was just the most loving animal ever! I never met an Afghan that could run freely off a leash and come back when you called her. I will miss her at night on our feet protecting us I will miss her during the day when she would walk up and push me with her nose. I will miss chasing her around the yard laughing hysterical as she would effortlessly sidestep me. But I think who will miss her most of all is her brother Jordan. Those too were inseparable, as bad as we feel Jordy feels way worse. I loved that DOG. She was my little "cookie girl" And I thank you for allowing me to have her and spend my life with her. I don't know what or how you breed your dogs but I know you breed them with LOVE there is no question about that. If anyone out there is LUCKY enough to have a GRANDEUR dog they know what I'm talking about. My parents had POLO and still have RIO & TAZZY, so I know what I'm talking about. I don't want to sound like I'm advertising but I just wanted the world to know how I feel about Grandeur and there amazing Afghan Hounds. Its evident they have a super rich history in show dogs but as Pets and loving friends or companions YOUR DOGS ARE THE GREATEST IN THE UNIVERSE. I remember when I was twelve years old I saw Tryst in the group ring and fell in love. I had my first show dog, a whippet from Jan Swayze, and she introduced me to Michael Canalizo; I was too scared to talk to him, but he let me pet Tryst. I will never forget how much I loved her and how much Michael encouraged me. As I got older I had the opportunity to show under Mr. Canalizo both in juniors and in the breed ring it just encouraged my admiration and respect for how he handled dogs. I so admire both your dedication to the dogs and your generosity to the people who own them. Thank you for being such a great example to me as I learn more about this wonderful sport. John Bladakas <jbladakas@localnet.net> Minneapolis, MN USA - Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 17:58:21 (EST) Dear team of Grandeur My name is Radek Blazo, I am 21 years old and come from Slovakia. I have been a great fan of dogs and dog shows since the early years of age. My family was not a dog family so I did not have any dog at home. But when I become a teenager, I got a Danish imported Lhasa apso who I was showing to Champion title and in his senior age he bacame a top Veteran in country. I love Lhasa apsos but one of my dreams was always to have or work with Afghan hound. My interest in handling brought me to Italy for a summer 3 years ago, when I was working for a professional handler Mia Ejerstad and Thomas Vastiaux. Especially Mia became my dear friend and teacher willing to share knowledge. The next year I spent three months in Chic Choix Kennel in Finland working in a family of Juha Kares. I went there to learn mainly about Lhasas but my interest grew on other breeds too. I really enjoyed this summer, met wonderful people and dogs. Maybe you are asking why I stayed only for few months. Well, I am still a student, actually studying at university in Slovakia but I do not want to hang up dogs at all. That is why I am using at least summers to improve and learn from professionals. The last summer I spent working for Mia in Italy again. I was very pleased to come there again and enjoyed it very much. Our country has a visa obligation to USA and so I was not allowed to travel there or work for a handler at all. I was fortuned to got visas last October. And finally, I am getting to the point of why I am writing you. I have been a great fan of your dogs, I know all the facts about your kennel. The more I am getting to know, I am getting more and more impressed with the work you do in breeding and showing Afghans. From the videos you have on your website I see how your dogs look like not only in the photos. Thei style is absolutely a great one. They definitely are rare in the balance and soundnes. I am not sure if you have any assistants to help you in the kennel and shows maybe too. I was planning to come to USA for the summer of 2005 and I would be very honoured if I had the opportunity to help you and learn from you. Please, let me know if there could be a possibility for it. Feel free to ask any questions, I will be glad to answer. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Yours, Radek Radek Blazo <radek.blazo@atlas.sk> Slovakia - Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 10:27:07 (EST) Hello, When I was 9 years old, my brother brought home an Afghan Hound that someone gave to him. When my mother looked at the papers, she couldn't believe that someone gave him a dog like this. Every dog in the pedigree was a champion dog. I remember them saying he was a descendent of a famous Afghan Hound. My brother had mentioned the fire back then that caused the demise of most of the dogs. After reading this site very carefully, I realized "Alfie" was a Grandeur Afghan. We had Alfie for many years. Anytime I took Alfie outside, everyone would ask, "what type of dog is that", or say "that is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen". My brother took Alfie to one dog show and he won 1st place. We were so excited. Alfie was a natural, we probably could've taken him to more shows. Alfie had some personality. When he walked, it looked like he knew he was the best dog in the neighborhood. He was very funny too, he could actually make you laugh. We had alot of fun with Alfie. He loved to play in the yard. He loved people. He loved when people came to the house. He also would get into some predicaments. My brother took him to a park with a reservoir. Alfie ran into the mud. My mother tried so hard to fix his hair, but she couldn't. What a mess, he had to go to the groomer. The groomer had to cut 1/2 the length of his coat. He was a great dog. I miss him and think about him all the time. I think about how lucky I was to have such a special dog/friend growing up. I will never forget Alfie. I have pictures of him that I have to find. When I do, I will send them to you. They were my last two as my hands are now too arthritic to brush, brush, brush every night. They were by far the best of all my afghans, sweet, impish and playful. It was wonderful to see all your pictures and read the articles. My children aren't afghan oriented but my grandchildren are. Perhaps when they have homes of their own we will again know the joy of a Grandeur afghan. Helen Lazar <abluzbabe@earthlink.net> Orlando, FL USA - Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 21:30:25 (EST) Dear Grandeurs, My truest and most enthusiastic congratulations for so incredibly super-great website. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but the animation pages which I cannot see or open so far (I'm too green with Internet yet!). Ever since my starting point in Afghan Hounds when a t.g., over 30 years on now, Grandeur has meant everything in the scene and breeding of the unique Hound of Afghanistan, and to-day this my early feeling is even stronger in me. Sadly I have read a few comments in your guestbook about GRANDEUR by some worldwide Afghan people I met who do not stick themselves to what they really think, but that is like the "salt" or the "pepper" in this matter. Roxanna Roxanna <xhenna_hotmail.com> madrid, madrid españa - Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 11:40:05 (EST) Back when I started showing dogs, I used to show my Cardis then run to see the Afghans which were often on later than my breed. I learned how to show by watching the better handlers like Michael Canalizo with Triumph, then Tryst. I haven't been seeing Grandeur Afghans around lately, though my friend recently told me there are some Grandeur Afghans out again. Where can I see them, who is showing them, and are there again dogs that take my breath away with their beauty and grace??? I sure hope so. I only wish that I could be as fortunate as others to have met Sunny and to have owned a Grandeur line dog. This line to me is the pinnacle of Afghans and is what made me have two of my own. He was there for me at the time of our loss of his sister, "Kelsey" (Trumpet of Grandeur) a year earlier. I would dearly love to have another Affie but my circumstances won't allow it at this time. As far as I am concerned any Afghan other than a Grandeur Afghan just won't do. This takes me back years ago when my mother bred Afghans, late 1940s and early 1950s under the name Aldachar. Browsing the internet I see one of the dogs she bred Kandorissa of Aldachar is in a lot of pedigrees. We also bred Arabian horses and that conflicted with the Afghan shows and we could not go to both. Thanks again for breeding some absolutely beautiful dogs. So many spectacular wins, such shining beauty and exuberance; without her the world has lost some of its lustre. Yet my favorite memory of Tryst is from a day during her "first" retirement. At an outdoor show a very young Bill Rechler was walking with her on a long, loose lead and she moved quietly and elegantly beside him with no apparent thought of bounding off to join the more exciting activities at ringside. To me it is an image that epitomizes the sweetness of her personality. I cherished Tryst from afar, and grieve for all of you who knew and cherished and loved her the most. We will always remember her as the most beautiful Afghan. I recall being next to Tryst and Michael in one of my very few times in a group ring with my saluki. Tryst, made a couple of attempts to sneak her mouth into my jacket pocket to try to swipe our liver! She was such a sweet girl ! Scott & Rachel Armstrong <sovereign@saluki.org> Orlando, Fl USA - Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at 01:07:55 (EDT) To say "I am sorry" seems a bit inadequate in the face of acute grief..We are so very sorry to hear of your loss of Tryst. At this time even memories are painful, but after tomorrow and more tomorrows they will become precious treasures. Those of us who met Tryst can remember that we encountered a Queen. Those of us who read about her and heard about her learned that she was a Mighty Huntress. She consistently brought home the prize! Godspeed, Tryst! She had that indefinable quality that transmutes to immortality in the minds of all who knew her. Just as Sunny still sits on a couch in a corner of my brain, Tryst will float across my field of inner sight, and I know she will also be curled up snugly inside the hearts of those she loved. A more stunning, elegant lady with unmatched movement and grace; shown with Michael's style could not be duplicated! We know your hearts are broken, never to completely mend but memories to have forever. Thank you for "sharing" her with all of us! Run with the wind beautiful Tryst.......... USA - Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 21:45:58 (EDT) Dear Roger, Evelyn, Michael and all at Grandeur; What can we possibly say about the loss of your beautiful Tryst? She was as sweet as she was beautiful. We were fortunate to watch her grow and develop into such an exceptional representative of our beloved breed. To know Tryst was to truly love her. Our deepest condolences to you all. Tryst has crossed over, and I know there were many, many friends, both human and canine, waiting to welcome her. Thankfully, we all have many beautiful and happy memories of her. She will live on in our hearts.. until we all meet again. All our love, Bob & Angela Bob and Angela DiNicola <rdinicol#ix.netcom.com> Edison, NJ USA - Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 20:04:52 (EDT) I am SO sorry to hear of your very sad loss. sylvia wright <wrights@lycos.de> münster, germany - Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 19:14:50 (EDT) I recall seeing Tryst and Michael at the Thanksgiving cluster shows in New England. Tryst was up on her crate and a friend's little boy was nearby when Michael asked him to "give her a pat for luck" - Tryst went on to win BIS that day. I understand that this little ritual of having a child pat her would result in BIS -- as charming as it is - somehow methinks it was more than the pat. Sleep well Lady Tryst - you left a strong legacy. One day I was watching TV of the Westminster Show in NYC, and saw an afghan of such grace and beauty that it literally blew my mind! It will be a long time before there is another Tryst. When went there because the fabulos Tryst will be shown, or so, we heared. Tryst was unforgetable fantastic that day and we enjoyed to see the perfect team. Michael posed Tryst only for us, so we could take a picture outside the ring that day. With kindness and without stress, even it was short before the final desision. Thank you, Michael and Anna, for our personaly Photo of Tryst. Our deepest condolences on the loss of your girl. She was a true afghan if ever there was one in my eyes. Tryst is special to me because she was the beginning for me. I was 8 years old and she was the first afghan I ever saw in my life. God I miss you. Yours forever.....Anna Anna NY USA - Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 10:34:53 (EDT) Tryst and Mike provided me and the entire dog fancy with some of the most thrilling moments in history. It is only fitting that this breathtaking and ethereal bitch set the all time show records for the breed. (If your dog has won 67 Bests in Show, you only have 100 more to go to surpass Tryst's record!) She won most of those BISs in the last century but her record was cemented in this new century. Tryst was so much more than ribbons and trophies and records. She embodied everything that is wonderful about the breed and she was surrounded by some fabulous people as well. Tryst must be with Sunny now wherever that is and Sunny must be so proud of the many gorgeous Grandeur dogs that laid the foundation for Tryst. Grief is the price you pay for love. I would rather have known Tryst and lost her than to have never known her at all. Her supreme elegance may never be equaled. Best wishes especially to Roger and Mike who are most responsible for all of Tryst's beautiful successes. My affection for Roger, Michael, Anna, Donna and the entire group at Grandeur. Rosa Rosa Ovies <rikitiki@teleline.es> Spain - Monday, August 26, 2002 at 15:44:03 (EDT) Goodbye sweet, beautiful Tryst. You will never be forgotten by those of us touched by you. We were at shows when we heard the news, and there was shocked silence. How could one so beutiful really be gone? Our wins this weekend were dedicated to the lovely Tryst. She was not only the consumate show girl, she was a great ambassador of the breed. My fondest recollection was of my father getting to give her a good luck pat before she went in the ring to win another specialty. This was the "pretty black dog" he had seen on TV, and he was sure his pat was what gave her that win. Goodbye sweet lady; you will always be in my heart. Lynn Lynn Mercer <mmercer@hga.com> Minneapolis, MN USA - Monday, August 26, 2002 at 15:01:21 (EDT) Even though my breed is not Afghans and I do not show at the BIS level (at least not yet!), I have always looked up to the Grandeur dogs and followed their careers in the dog magazines and on TV and whenever I could catch a glimpse of them at shows. I have been doing this since, I think, Blu Shah. And I have been sorry for their loss when each one's time came. But I was not prepared for the depth of my sorrow to hear of the passing of the great Ch. Tryst of Grandeur. My sympathies to her caretakers and family, and to the entire dog world who has lost a shining star. Sue Jablonski <suejabl@hotmail.com> Cleveland, OH USA - Monday, August 26, 2002 at 14:55:17 (EDT) My wife and I had the great pleasure of meeting Tryst several times in person and the even greater pleasure of having her litter sister Tramp. Tramp (we call her Treasure) is still with us and we love her dearly. We are very sad at the loss of Tryst of Grandeur. I truly believe that she was the absolute best of the Afghan Hound breed, both in and out of the show ring. The world is a poorer place without her. My sincere condolences to Roger, Michael, Anna, Donna and the entire group at Grandeur. Phillip Hunt <phillipmerlin@aol.com> Coram, NY USA - A few years back, my mother and I went to a dogshow in Flint Michigan just to see Tryst. She was well worth the drive. Carol Rivette <carolriv@chartermi.net> Bay City, MI USA - I have had the pleasure of watching Michael and Tryst many times--I still have them on tape, free-baiting at the Garden. To me, she just epitomized a great show bitch and a great bitch, period. There is one less star in the pantheon of show dogs on earth---go well, Tryst. Betsy Denning, Borzoi person Elizabeth Denning <Denning251@aol.com> Somerset, MA USA - godspeed tryst... suzi <seer@duo-county.com> Ky USA - I had the pleasure to see Tryst and Michael win BISS at the Evergreen AHC Specialty in 1999. After judging I recall Michael commenting on the weather and humidity, Tryst pulled her head back and looked at him as if to "I could have done it by myself Old Man!" She was a legend, breathtaking, always regal and an Afghan Hound in every sense. Deepest condolences to Michael and the Rechler family. Val Val Hiller <dlorah@castleisp.com> Fall Creek, OR USA - If Afghans are the 'King of Dogs' then surely Tryst was the Queen. I have only ever seen Tryst in publications and on this website, but her quality was unsurpassed and must have been evident to all. Reg, Sheri and Ben Johansen Sheri Johansen <rsbjohansen@bigpond.com.au> Hazelbrook, NSW Australia - My deepest condolences on the loss of Tryst. I remember watching Tryst and Michael at shows, being so moved by their perfomances, and just absolutely spellbound. I said to myself that someday I'll have a showdog. So here I am quite a few years later with my first Borzoi, a self black and tan bitch. The first time we showed to Michael, he commented on my nerves--if he only knew what an inspiration he and Tryst had been for me!!! All I could think about was the 2 of them flashing their flash and captivating entire audiences of people. And all wins are special moments in time, but when he awarded my bitch BOB I almost fainted. This past weekend I had the pleasure to show to him again, and he awarded us again with the breed, and had so much advice and so many kind words for us that I am forever grateful. these wins will always be the most near and dear to my heart, as my bitch finished this weekend under Michael and his father. I just don't know if I'd be showing or not if it had not been for the magic of Michael and Tryst. For the years that Michael and Tryst touched all our lives, I am grateful. The memories are wonderful, and the inspiration they provided for newcomers to the sport of dog shows will never be forgotten. Again, my condolences to you all on your loss. She will never be forgotten. Stephanie Johnson-Taylor <lifesshortbitehard@hotmail.com> Tupelo, MS USA - I saw (#21) Tryst with Michael for my first time at Westminster 2000--a real class act. For me, the best of show was Tryst and the way she "floated" around the ring--a real work of art. You could see the bond between the two and that winning spirit. Tryst will be missed by us all. GOD BLESS MARY TURNER <ZHARAKA@AOL.COM> NORTHFIELD, ILL USA - The only time I ever saw Tryst show was when the final Alpo championship show was on cable. It's been a long time, and I can't remember the network, or any of the other dogs -- but remember very well the ring presence, the beauty, and the obvious quality that Tryst brought with her into the ring. I knew then that was what I wanted to do with my dogs, and even though a different breed -- was the quality I wished to attain. I am very sorry to hear of her passing; but know that she will remain in the hearts and minds of all who knew and admired her -- however briefly, however afar. Heather Gearhart <sommerdal@dalmania.net> Birmingham, AL USA - I am so sorry to hear about Tryst, she will be so missed by all. You are what dreams are made of. Good nite my sweet, the Rainbow Bridge is for you, enjoy Brenda Burns Brenda Burns <afghansofcharsada@sympatico.ca> Canfield, On Canada - I first saw Tryst at the AHCA specialty in San Diego. There was no way to take your eyes off that beautiful girl who dominated the ring both standing still and moving. It reminded me of when, as a teenager growing up in NY, I had made the pilgrimage to Long Island to see Shirkhan who was about sixteen then. He lay on his couch in the living room, eyes dim but when Sunny asked him to pose, he climbed off the couch and through sheer will, stood proud and steady, looking off into the distance. He was a showman to the end but more than that, he had heart. Congratulations on the achievements of the Grandeur Kennels. Harriet King San Diego, CA USA - My heart goes out to all at Grandeur on the loss of the lovely Tryst. She exemplified what an Afghan Hound could be, and was not only an incredible showdog, she was a delightful dog to be around. I'm thankful that the world had her to enjoy for almost 12 years, and I will treasure my memories of her. What wonderful memories they are... Sleep well, sweet Tryst. |
